Ooking for Butter

After a disagreement over why she could not have a 2nd Banana;
Declaring there would be NO more marshmallows until bedtime snack ;
After telling her for the 25th time, in 30 minutes to "PUT THE KITTY DOWN"

Aunt Olly & Maddy, Summer 2009

the sweetest voice asked "Outside ook at the moon, Mommy? Go Outside Mommy?"

"Sure sweetie - just put your shoes on"

And, after 15 minutes of looking and finally locating the pair of shoes that she wanted to wear - to "ook" at the moon, we were on the back deck. We looked to the East, we looked to the West, we went around to the front of the house to look North. No moon. We looked under the deck and behind the shed - cause, well, you never know. No moon.

Sadly, I looked at Madaline and said "No moon tonight honey - too many clouds. Come on, its dark, its cold, lets go inside"

And, holy moly, you would have thought I told her that I was going to take her birthday away. Anyone within a 10 miles radius must have thought the world was coming to an end with all the screaming that was going on.

And, just as suddenly as it all started, her gnat like attention span was diverted from her I-Wanna-Ook-At-The-Moon scream fest by my sister's cat suddenly appearing and prowling around on our deck.

After chasing Olly's cat around the deck a few times, Madaline declared "Go inside Mommy - Me take a shower/bath - Shower/bath make it butter. Make it butter Mommy".

And, just like that, we were done "ooking" for the moon. And, off we went....inside....to make it "butter", err, better.

You Capture: Autumn

We are shaking things up a little bit today. It doesn't help that I really didn't have much to post about today. So, as a result, I decided to participate in:

Photobucket

hosted by Beth over at I Should Be Folding Laundry. For the last few weeks I have been looking longingly at the You Capture posts and going - I can do that. Maybe. Well - this weeks topic is right up my alley. That is because Autumn is my by far my FAVORITE time of the year! I LOVE IT.

There is just something about the heightened visible contrast in the countryside that makes Autumn my favorite time of the year.

The warm and cold; The soft and hard; The dark and Light; The dull and brilliant - Just the sheer complex beauty of it all.

But - perhaps the reason I have loved fall so much this year - Is the JOY, just the sheer JOY that my Mayhem Maker has gotten out of something as simple as picking apples.

We have been twice already this fall - I am sure we will get there at lease one more time if Madaline has any say in it.

Wordless/Wordful Wednesday: Apples, Apples & MORE Apples!

For the second time this year we went Apple Picking. The first time, we picked almost 30lbs of apples. This time, we picked 60lbs. It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon - the trees in the lower Orchard were still full of apples, many just at the right height for Madaline to pick. And, last night, as she was asking for a snack, she said to me "Mommy - me eat me apple me pick". How cute is that?

Looking for more? Other than mine?

Pumpkin Picking

Every year we got the same place to get pumpkins. A local farmer plants a field full of pumpkins. You drive into the perimeter of is field, park, walk into the field, and choose your pumpkins. Last year, we picked out a pumpkin so big that we had to roll it out of the field.

The cost is a $1.oo a pumpkin. That's right - a $1.00 a pumpkin - big or small, tiny or huge. As we were driving up, we noticed one road side stand after another. Each place had mums, grapes, late harvest peaches and pumpkins for sale. Pumpkins for sale starting at $3.00 each for a tiny round one, and as much as $7.00 for a what I would consider a good size carving pumpkin.

We ended up with 10 pumpkins. A few for decoration and a few to carve! The farmer has a farm stand across the road from the field - he always has a few pumpkins for sale for those that are too lazy to walk the field and pick thier own. And, most importantly, he always has cider and donuts for the kids. This year, he had grown two Great Pumpkins - which provided a great back drop and photo op for my 'over tired I am in desperate need of a nap' Mayhem Maker.

October Snow

This is what I came home to and then woke up to last Friday morning, October 16th.

I had one very unhappy Mayhem Maker last Thursday evening, when I informed her that it was too dark for her to play outside in the snow. My husband informed me that no sooner was she up for the day, on Friday (10/16) that she HAD to go outside.

Looks like fun to me!

How I Get My Daughter to Listen and Mind

I am a firm believer of tell it like it is parenting with a bit of fear splashed in. I tend to make other parents cover their children's ears and shield their eyes in stores as I am saying the things listed below. I have people walk up to me in parking lots and tell me that I should NOT say such things to my daughter. But, it works - at least for us.

As we are getting out of the car in the grocery store parking lot:
Me: "You need to hold my hand"
DD: "NO"
Me: "You need to hold my hand before you get run over and go splat"
(woman walking by looks at me like I am evil)
DD: "Yes Mommy" *holds my hand all the way to the store*

Madaline is trying to balance herself on the arm of the couch to look out the big bag window in the living room:
ME: "You need to get down from there"
DD: "No"
Me: "I don't have time for broken bones and contorted limbs - NOW, get down from there"
DD: "Yes, Mommy"

Madaline has found a tiny toy that we thought we had put up out of her reach:
Me: "You need to take that out of your mouth"
Maddy: "No"
Me: "Do you want to choke and die? Take it out of your mouth"
Maddy" "Ok Mommy" *hands me small toy*

Madaline is taking a bath and I have just shut the water off:
Me: "Maddy please don't stick your finger up that thing the water comes out of"
Maddy: *continues doing what she's doing*
Me: "Madaline...you need to stop putting your finger in the water thingy"
Maddy: *continues to ignore me*
Me: "Madaline - do you want your finger to get stuck and us to have to cut your whole arm off?"
Maddy: "No."
Me: "Then get your finger out of there"
Maddy: "Ok"

Madaline is exploring in the upper part of the Orchard, a good 1/2 - 3/4 of a football field in lengh from the deck where I am sitting:
My mom: "You shouldn't let her wander up there by herself"
Me: "Why...."
My Mom: "Someone might take her"
Me: "Dude, Mom, Who's going to come out of the hedgerow and take take her? The Deer? Sasquatch? And, besides, I guarantee that Sasquatch would return her probably 5 minutes after he takes her"
My Mom: "True"
Me: "See...nothing to worry about.....
Me: "Madaline....can you come a bit closer to the backyard - before something comes out of the woods and eats you?"

Madaline is standing in the large part of the cart as we are tooling around Walmart
Me: "Can you sit down please?"
Maddy: "No" * starts to jump up and down*
Me: "Madaline, do you want to fall out of the cart and crack your head open? All your brains will fall out"
*No less than 3 people turn and give us looks of horror*
Maddy: "No"
Me: "Well, then sit down, Mommy doesn't have time for blood and guts today"
Maddy: "Ok Mommy"

And, if all else fails - I resort to bribing. Nothing gets a my kid to sit at the dinner table, in a cart or stops her in her naughty tracks like the promise of a trip to Dunkin Donuts.

Flashback Friday - Haircuts & Pumpkins

I thought I would try something different today, I have a lot of draft post started, but nothing really, well, fit for me to hit the publish button. So, I am going to participate in Flashback Friday with Texan Mama today:

1581884212_57276dd550_o

And, for your viewing pleasure, I am going to go back to almost a year ago...a post from 10/07/08 - Banshee Gets Her 1st & Goes Pumpkin Picking. (Our Lil' Mayhem Maker was also know effectionately as our lil' Banshee for her non-stop screaming as an infant)

Enjoy!!

10/07/08 - Banshee Gets Her 1st & Goes Pumpkin Picking.

I took Madaline to get a trim - her hair really was getting rather out of control. She has some wispy bangs now, so, I not longer have to battle with her very morning to put it up.

And, later that afternoon, my mom & I took her up the side of the lake, to pick pumpkins. This guy every year plants a huge field, with pumpkins and you just drive in, walk the field & pick your pumpkin. The price is great. The one was so big that we had to roll it out of the patch. She really wasn't all the interested in the pumpkins - I really thought she would be.

Morris & Murphy

A little over a month ago, my beloved calico Chloe succumbed to some strange, none treatable neurological disorder.

I didn't want to get kittens right away. My husband did. Madaline was indifferent to the whole thing. Or so it seemed. Except when at least twice a week she would ask where Chloe was.

This past Monday, I responded to an ad posted on Craig's List that advertised 5 kittens for free. I e-mailed about the ad, not getting my hopes up, since I had responded to a few other kittens for free ads the week before, and never gotten any response back.

I got a response.... and may I introduce you to our new family members

Morris

Murphy

Aren't they cute?
*please excuse the pistachio shell and the bent straw, they are under a chair in the living rooom - and clearly our maid has been slacking*
*leave the maid alone - she works 40 hours a week, commutes 30 minutes each way - I AM TIRED!*
